Irish rumble¶
What it is¶
An Irish rumble is a team-of-four game with a build to it: the number of Stableford scores that count rises as the round goes on. The early holes count only the team's single best points score, the middle holes count two, the closing stretch counts three, and the final hole counts all four. A hot start from one player can carry the side early, but down the stretch the whole team has to deliver — which is what makes the back nine of a rumble so tense.
How scoring works¶
- All four team members play their own ball and record a gross score on every hole — or pick up (see below).
- Each player's Stableford points for the hole come from their net result against par on the standard ladder: net birdie = 3, net par = 2, net bogey = 1, net double-bogey or worse = 0. Net is gross adjusted for the handicap strokes they receive, which fall on the hardest holes by stroke index.
- How many of the four point scores count rises through the round on a fixed scheme:
- Holes 1–6: the single best points score counts.
- Holes 7–12: the best two points scores count.
- Holes 13–17: the best three count.
- Hole 18: all four count.
On each hole, add the counting point scores together for the team's hole score. 4. Add the team's hole scores across the round; the highest total wins. 5. A player who picks up or blows up simply scores 0 points for that hole and stays a valid contributor — there is no need to hole out. It only hurts on the closing holes, where more scores count and a 0 can no longer hide behind a teammate. 6. Level teams are separated on countback — the better back nine, then the last six holes, then the last three, then the final hole.
Worked example¶
One team of four — Players A, B, C, and D — Stableford points shown. These four holes sample each band of the round to show how the count grows:
| Hole | Band | A | B | C | D | Counts | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | best 1 | 2 | 1 | 2 | 0 | 2 | 2 |
| 9 | best 2 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 3 | 3 + 3 | 6 |
| 15 | best 3 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 2 + 2 + 1 | 5 |
| 18 | all 4 | 2 | 3 | 1 | 0 | 2 + 3 + 1 + 0 | 6 |
| Total | 19 |
Across these four holes the team totals 19 points. On the 4th only the single best points score (a 2) counts; by the 18th every score is on the card, so D's blow-up (0 points) can no longer be hidden.
When to use it¶
The format for a four-player team that wants a building finish. The rising count keeps the early holes relaxed and the closing holes fraught — a side can lead at the turn and still be caught once three, then all four, scores have to count. A team of four fills a single group exactly.
Variations¶
- Gross or net points. Score the points off gross for a scratch result, or off each player's net for a handicap result.
- For the team format where every card counts on every hole, see Low scratch/net · Stroke; where a single best carries every hole, see Best ball · Stroke.
