Scramble · Match play¶
What it is¶
This is a scramble played head-to-head. Each side is a pair playing the scramble way — both partners tee off, the side plays on from the better shot every time, and records a single team score per hole — and the two sides' team scores are matched against each other hole by hole. Whoever wins more holes wins the match. It brings the buzz of a scramble to a two-versus-two contest.
How scoring works¶
- Each side plays the hole as a scramble: both partners tee off, the side plays on from the better shot, and so on until the ball is holed. Record one team score per hole for each side.
- Each side plays off a single team handicap — the standard allowance for a pair is 35% of the lower handicap plus 15% of the higher — which gives each side's net per hole.
- Compare the two sides' net on the hole: the lower wins the hole; equal halves it.
- The match is tracked as holes up. When a side leads by more than the holes remaining, the match is won early (for example "4&3"). Level at the end is "all square".
Worked example¶
Side 1 versus Side 2, each side's net team score per hole shown:

After three holes the match is all square — Side 1's win on the 1st was cancelled by Side 2 on the 3rd. Over a full eighteen, the side more holes up at the finish wins.
When to use it¶
A lively team match for two pairs who want the give-and-take of match play with the everyone-pitches-in feel of a scramble. A group holds four players — two pairs — which is exactly one match. Great for team events and friendly contests between sides.
